The modern off-road diesel engine has gone through complex and significant changes in the past decade. This includes Tier 4Final engines, which require diesel exhaust fluid, or DEF, to operate properly.

Since 2014, the majority of large-displacement and off-road diesel engines (those that are 75 horsepower and up) are using DEF to meet the Tier 4 Final emissions regulations. With this, the fluid is injected in the exhaust stream and, when catalysts are present, turn the smog-inducing NOx into a harmless mix of nitrogen, water, and oxygen.
